hunched over
a map of the world.
All my nights
were spent
plotting takeovers
of small European monarchies.
We lived
in a small orchard,
our beds beneath branches
which cast shadows
over our expectant faces.
Occasionally,
I would go outside
and practice my art
on the old Ponderosa pine.
Sometimes,
if I fought hard enough,
it would retaliate.
